A few days passed, and under Song Yuhang’s incessant questioning, Ji Jingxing was almost at her wits’ end when Duan Cheng and the others came to visit her, bringing gifts.

“Captain Song, we heard you’ve recovered a lot, and we’re here on behalf of the Jiangcheng City Bureau to see how you’re doing.”

Even the young man who never minced words has learned to speak courteously.

Song Yuhang’s hand slipped from Ji Jingxing’s sleeve. She had just gained enough strength to walk on her own, and with a faltering gait, she staggered over to him, clutching his arm as if she had found a savior.

“Tell me, where is Lin Yan?”

Fang Xin took a step forward, wanting to help her sit down: “Captain Song…”

Song Yuhang brushed the person aside and intensified her tone: “Where the hell is Lin Yan?!”

“Captain Song, Sister Lin she…”

Fang Xin’s words were not yet finished when she was violently interrupted.

“Duan Cheng, I want you to tell me!” She still clung to his sleeve, with an urgent look in her eyes that slowly began to brim with tears.

“Where the hell is Lin Yan, tell me, where did she go…” By the end, her voice had become hoarse.

Duan Cheng looked at her face, his lips quivering, unable to speak, his fists clenched tightly.

Ji Jingxing came over to pull her away: “Yuhang, it’s time for your medicine.”

“I won’t take it! Duan Cheng, say something!” Song Yuhang shook his arm: “Huh? Lin Yan was so good to you, always letting you carry the equipment instead of anyone else, just to give you a chance to learn. She might have openly shown disgust towards you, but in private, she has told me more than once that you would definitely become a good forensic doctor. Tell me, tell me, where did she go?”

Her voice was hoarse, her eyes red-rimmed, her body swaying as if she might collapse at any moment.

How could he bear to tell her the cruel truth when she looked like this?

Duan Cheng, a grown man, finally couldn’t help but cover his face with his hands and cry silently under such earnest gaze.

Song Yuhang stumbled a few steps, let go of his arm, and then went to grab Fang Xin.

“Fang Xin, Fang Xin, he won’t tell me, you tell me. Wasn’t Lin Yan still teaching you beauty tips that day? Didn’t we agree on a trip to the islands together? You tell me, please, I’ll find her, and we’ll all go together, okay, please?”

She was like a child, stubbornly pursuing the answer, grabbing onto the shoulders in front of her, shaking them hard.

Fang Xin didn’t respond and just turned away, sniffling.

Song Yuhang turned her gaze to Zheng Chengrui: “Old Zheng, Old Zheng, I’m begging you, please, they won’t tell me, but you can, right? I know Lin Yan did you wrong before, I apologize on her behalf, I apologize…”

As she spoke, she was about to kneel and kowtow to him but was promptly supported and steadied by several hands.

“Captain Song, Captain Song, don’t do this, please don’t…”

Behind those glasses, tears glimmered as Zheng Chengrui choked up, “It’s not that we don’t want to tell you; it’s just, it’s…”

They still couldn’t come to terms with the devastating news that Lin Yan had passed away; otherwise, they wouldn’t have waited until today to visit her.

Song Yuhang was stunned as she turned to look at everyone in the room, and that was when she noticed that they were all crying.

What were they crying for?

All she wanted to know was where Lin Yan had gone.

She directed her last plea for help towards Ji Jingxing, her voice hoarse as she called out, “Sister, I know you’ve never liked Lin Yan much, but for the sake of her having saved you and Mom, please tell me, where has she gone?”

When Song Yuhang spoke those words, every syllable was steeped in tears of blood, and even Duan Cheng, standing beside her, could feel the chilling despair emanating from her.

How could Ji Jingxing bear to witness such a pleading look, such a humbled plea?

She turned her back, wiping away tears with the back of her hand.

Song Yuhang understood then; she realized that no one here would tell her the answer.

From their eyes, she read the deep sadness, as well as the pity and sympathy.

She staggered back two steps, her body swaying, and knocked over the IV stand.

Ji Jingxing came forward to support her, but her hand was briskly pushed away.

Song Yuhang, mustering strength from who knows where, pushed them aside and stood up, stumbling and rushing out the door.

“Yuhang!”

Having been in bed for so long, her knees hadn’t adjusted to such vigorous movement. She had only just run out the door when she fell to the ground.

It hurts.

All my insides are twisting in pain.

Song Yuhang’s fall brought tears to her eyes. Clenching her teeth, her eyes reddening, her hands trembling, she propped herself up from the ground, inch by inch, getting back up.

She went on to grab every medical staff member passing by.

“Have you seen Lin Yan? She’s tall, very pretty.”

If someone asked who she was,

Song Yuhang would curve her lips into a smile, her eyes still brimming with tears, yet her smile so sincerely happy.

“She… She’s my fiancée.”

“We’re about to get married, but I can’t find her. Have you seen her?”

In the hallway, the crowd around her whispered and pointed: She must be crazy.

“Yuhang!” Ji Jingxing caught up from behind, calling her name with a voice hoarse from exertion.

Song Yuhang pushed through the crowd and dashed out, starting to knock on every ward’s door, repeating the same question.

“Have you seen Lin Yan?”

“Have you seen my fiancée?”

“I can’t find her. She’s tall and very beautiful.”

……

“Crazy!”

Someone shoved her out, medical staff tried to grab her, Ji Jingxing chased after her, and Duan Cheng and the others encircled her.

Song Yuhang struggled, tearing and fighting back, kicking and hitting, roaring with all her might.

A medical staff member, holding a syringe, attempted to inject her, but she suddenly lashed out, biting down hard on their wrist, imitating Lin Yan.

The doctor, pained by the bite, dropped the syringe, and Song Yuhang seized the opportunity to push him away, scrambling out of the encirclement.

She looked a complete mess, her hair disheveled, her eyes bloodshot, wearing a patient’s uniform. She ran a few steps but, due to lack of strength, collapsed to the ground. Biting back the pain, she got up and continued running forward.

She had to find Lin Yan, to locate her, to find her—this thought had never been so intense.

She wanted to marry her and never be apart again.

That afternoon, Song Yuhang had asked all the medical staff on each floor, knocked on every ward in the surgery department, but still couldn’t find the person she was looking for.

Ji Jingxing watched her standing at the entrance of the morgue, as the setting sun stretched her shadow long and far.

In the end, she didn’t have the courage to push open that door.

“Yuhang, let’s go home.”

The corridor had come to an end.

Song Yuhang turned around and numbly shuffled back the way she had come, muttering to herself with conviction.

“She promised me, she’d live well, she’d live well, she definitely isn’t here, definitely not…”

Ji Jingxing, afraid to agitate her further, didn’t dare to follow. “Yuhang, where do you want to go?”

“To… to her place.”
